Located just across the road from the Quinta da Bacalhoa, this museum originated as an abandoned workshop and bus depot that had been scarring the landscape and the relationship of the historic Quinta to its surroundings. In 2019, the Bacalhoa group purchased the premises to renovate and refurbish the buildings into a museum linked to the Quinta and other museum spaces housing the family's extensive art collection.

The main aesthetic aim of the exterior was to break up the extensive 140 meter long flat and blank facade by accentuating various sections and creating a new grand entrance and staircase at the center.

While the former composition felt monotonous and oppressive on the site (dwarfing any nearby buildings in size), the current building blends more seamlessly by its use of punctuation and familiar architectural language to relate to its surroundings.
